I knew the cold wind here was blowing Through the corners of your eyes I saw a distant sense of loathing More pronounced than real lies I touched your hand to see it moving Out of reach from my side And thought it strange to hear you crooning But you didn't want me ...to see you with your face so low on the surface water now And then I'd hear you call my name just to tell me something clear I never meant to get so high right now I never meant to get so high right now On you A car pulled over rain was falling From above and below I heard the damned well near calling But it was more because of you... ...and all the things you made me do in the act of only trying - - to please you I knew I'd never make it back I'd never be the same I only meant to get so high right now I never meant to get so high right now With you I knew the cold wind here was blowing

Oh Miss Melody it's been a while since you were chucking 'round I was hoping you'd find a place to finally settle down I know there's not that much that's going on round here But you don't know what you'll say 'til she whispers in your ear Oh but the melody of you Is still rushing through my head Oh Miss Melody I don't hear you when you start to speak I think it's I don't like the way to talk to think I don't blame you for practising everything I preach Maybe I should think some more before I start to teach Oh but the melody of you Is rushing round my head The melody of you Rushin' round my head Oh Miss Melody I suppose you might say this was goodbye I'm walking away again though I don't know why I hope that to see me leave don't bring you a tear If it helps I'll close my eyes and always have you near Oh but the melody of you Is rushing round my head The melody of you Rushin' round my head

Well you were never meant for me and though that said I possibly agree That I was meant for you And though you'd never understand a man of steel you'll always find a way To push him to the sand I've always tried To watch the sky but it still moves And though I try I hear this voice a-calling without warning No, no, no, no Well I could never guarantee or understand the sympathy in all The words you said to me And according to the fish that swim I've never been a richer man than when We woke up knee to knee And when we lie I see a different kind of view Though I decline I know I'm just delaying all my saying No, no, no, no Though I never meant these words I said would not come true Still all I feel is pain when I get close to you And though there's not a word I spoke I'm here to remedy the joke That lent itself to you Well the wind's a changing coming fast and I just felt that I would be the last To see what I would do I've always tried To watch the sky but it still moves And from inside I hear this voice a-calling without warning No, no, no, no No, no, no, no

Waiting round the corner where the children play with their friends in the springtime Lacing up your shoes for to keep the icy water from entering It's cold outside It's cold Pleading with your father just to hope to change his mind on something Useless but he doesn't so you go on your own to the woods in the night time You take your time, then you lead me down To the earth Lay with me tonight, then we'll surely last Eternity Waiting for your eyes to open with the light of the morning Glisten as the dew from the blades intrude on the blue sky yawning It's light outside It's light Breathing exudes from the coldest earth and your icy body Nothing but still you spent your days in the rolling springtime You take your time, then you lead me down To the earth Lay with me tonight, then we'll surely last Eternity

You might start to run a while, and I might start to hide You were only three when I was five So draw another breath love, open up your eyes Because I was here before you were alive And though I spent so many years alone Well I was only waiting for you to come And I could only see you when you cry You were only three when I was five I can see the future love, it's written in your eyes It leaks out every time you start to cry And I can hear a history love, and even when you try You can't stop your well from running dry And though I might will them to stay The feelings only slowly drift away And I can only see you when you cry You were only three when I was five You don't understand love, you've never seen her eyes You know she was only three when he was five They say they're gonna make it, they say that they'll survive I think it's a miracle they're alive And if you ever see him on his own See the fallen feathers where he's flown They say you only notice when she cries All the world's sorrows in her eyes

about

Surface Water was recorded with permission at the Church of the Ascension in Burghclere. Videos of the sessions are available on Josh's YouTube page (see above).

The EP takes on a more freak folk sound than previous efforts; Miss Melody in particular is led by a rigorous fingerpicking style.
